Ten Awesome Self Care Approaches to improve your Mind, Body and Soul

I constantly hear from my fellow sisters, friends or bloggers that “I am exhausted with life”, “I feel like a bad person/mom”, “I can’t do this anymore, i am giving up”, “I feel burnt out”, “I am so tired”, “I can’t deal with this stress” etc etc.Are you Stressed Out? Do you feel drained of energy? Does everything feel like a non-stop battle?

I also go through some of those myself being a mother of 3 kids, a wife, a home maker, stay at home mom.

Life gets hectic. Out of control. I get those moments when I just want to cry and eat a tub of ice cream in one go.

“I did not get a good night sleep”, “The baby was up all night and I had no sleep”, “my baby is teething and won’t stop crying all day”.

I have been there, heard that. I still have those days with my 2 toddlers.

Let’s FACE IT. LIFE HAPPENS. IT WEARS YOU OUT.

You don’t even have to be a mother to feel burnt out. You can be any woman who has a lot on her plate.

I refuse to let my life wear me down though. I am a fighter. I don’t usually let anyone push me around so why would I let my stress burn me out? I do not like being the one who will give up and just forget

I do not like being the one who will give up and just forget

about taking good care of myself.

That’s it!

THE SECRET TO LIFTING YOURSELF BACK UP IS “SELF CARE”.

It took me a while to figure this out on my own. No magazines or articles caught my eye until I realized this ultimate truth on my own.

No fairies will come and dust their magic potion one me. I don’t have a “genie in a bottle”. Heck, I don’t even a nanny to help me out.

So how can I still be who I am, and be the caregiver for my kids and tackle life with an IRON FIST?

SELF CARE!!

Yes!

Only you can help yourself be the BEST of it all. No one else but you can take care of yourself the way you DESERVE.

“Give your stress wings, and let it fly away. ” – Terri Guillemets

Do you ever forget to take care of yourself?

Finding the time to take proper care of yourself can be a huge task.

But it is not HARD at all! The simplest pleasures are within hands reach and you just need to stretch our arms to grab them!

LET’S GET STARTED.

I have listed below 10 APPROACHES to Self-Care that you can start immediately

UNPLUG

Try this For ONE DAY ( I promise you will feel A LOT better and refreshed next day )

UNPLUG from all your DEVICES. Keep your phone line open off course!

Unplug from Social Media, WIFI, Internet etc!

We all know how much our world has transformed over the last decade. Our life suddenly became overly dependent

on Social Media, The Internet and Gadgets!

We rely solely on the above to feel normal.

But, think back to the olden days. We did not need a cell phone, we hardly needed gadgets and what on earth is Internet?

That is something you use in school, or at the library for “timepass”.

TIME CHANGED. So has our Minds and bodies.

There is such a thing called ‘Internet Detox” and it is satisfying. it releases toxins from your mind and lets your brain heal.

I LOVED and ENJOYED this POST by the Fast Company so much I have to share with you

Here is another Beautiful post by a Toronto-based writer Christina. You will love this.

So, WILL YOU GIVE “INTERNET DETOX” a try? Let me know below in the comments!

#2

POWER NAP. REST

Pretty Self-explanatory right?

When you sleep, your brain heals. When your brain heals, your body rests and it also heals.

As a mom of 3 kids, I can tell you SLEEP is something that is on my mind 24/7.

I do not get enough sleep as I would like to.

But, there are POWER NAPS.

Power naps are a short sleep taken during the day in order to restore one’s mental alertness.

I am a huge advocate of Power Naps. I get very tired from waking up early and from not having constant deep sleep (BLAME MY 18 month old)

and so during the day whenever my two toddlers nap, I try to lay beside them and take a “cat nap”.

That may be 15 minutes to 1 hour depending on how long they do not fuss in their naps!

But let me assure you even those 15 minutes of nap is an absolute BLISS. Pure BLISS.

It makes me feel refreshed, more alert and ready to tackle the rest of the day.

Get Fresh Air

According to the EPA, our indoor environment is two to five times more toxic than our outdoor environment.

And this can have an impact on how our body and mind reacts to the toxins we are exposed to.

Opening the windows to let Fresh Air in every day is important as well as taking a walk in Fresh Air!

Be it cold or hot, the air outside has benefits for our mind, body, and soul.

You can’t change who you are, but you can change what you have in your head, you can refresh what

you’re thinking about, you can put some fresh air in your brain.

-Ernesto Bertarelli

Here is a list of benefits of getting some fresh air in your system:

  • Improves your blood pressure and heart rate
  • Strengthens your immune system.
  • Fresh air cleanses your lungs as you breathe in fresh oxygen and release the toxins from your body
  • More energy and sharper mind because the brain needs 20 percent pxygen to function at its’ best. Taking a walk in fresh air increases your heart beat and blood pressure and is pumps oxygen to your brain.
  • Fresh air oxygen more clarity to the brain, improves concentration, helps to think clearly and be more alert.
  • These results have a positive effect on your energy level and your mind.

READ SOMETHING

READING for me is FOOD FOR THOUGHT, It is like fuel for my brain and satisfaction in my heart.

As Dr. Seuss once wrote,

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” Diving into a good book opens up a whole world of knowledge starting from a very young age.

Diving into a good book opens up a whole world of possibilities. You can live a thousand lives through a book.

I personally love reading Self-help Books these days. No, they are not just for “Psychologically Ill” patients. They are for normal people like you and me as well!

They are for normal people like you and me as well!

*****

Have you heard any of Brenee Brown’s TED talks? Or heard of her books?

She may not FOCUS on writing books for SELF-CARE approaches but her talks and books about courage, rising strongly as a person

really puts perspective to life. Her words heal my mind and that is caring for myself.

One of her BEST SELLERS is:

Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be and Embrace Who You Are

Then there is the HAPPINESS PROJECT which is a wonderful book for everyone.

This book is like a breath of Fresh Mint to everyday life according

to one reader’s comment!

READ ANYTHING YOU WANT.

Read the QURAN. If you are a Christian then read the Bible!

If you are a Jew then read the Torah! if you are a Hindu then read the RAMAYAN!

Just do not read the NEWSPAPER though. You know how sad news can make us!

#5

CREATE SOMETHING

#6

TAKE YOUR VITAMINS

Don’t swallow it, chew it!! Look below for my reccommendations!

SALAAM NUTRITIONALS  is a Halal Gummy owned by a Female Entrepreneur.

SALAM VITAMINS is a family owned Business whose passion is Halal Goods.

The founders are from Lahore, Pakistan and based in the USA.

I was lucky enough to receive 2 Full Sized Adult and Kids Vitamin Samples from both of the Companies.

They taste so GOOD! T

My kids beg for more gummies every day now.

It feels amazing to have these brands who sell HALAL GUMMY VITAMINS because now my kids take their vitamins daily without a fuss!

They also provided me with more energy and I noticed it within 48 hours.

I have tried both brands in a period of 30 days.

Each brand for 10 days continuously. Then I took 2-day break and tried the other brand.

They both helped me tremendously to maintain my energy levels. Alhamdulillah!

#7

EAT more fruits and veggies.

No doubt they are nature’s gems which Allah has gifted us with.

Fruits have natural sugars and vitamins to fill the vitamins your body may lack. Hence, give you better health and more stress battling energy!

Vegetables are sources of many nutrients, including potassium, dietary fiber, folate (folic acid), vitamin A, and vitamin C.

They are low in calorie too!

Whenever I feel like my day is going to be long and tiring, I pull out my Blender and make a deliciously

balanced Smoothie drink with fruits and vegetables.

♥ One of my go to Smoothie recipe is ♥

  1. 1 ripe banana
  2. A handful of baby spinach
  3. half of a ripened Avocado
  4. 1 teaspoon Chia Seeds
  5. 1 cup Milk or Yogurt (if yogurt then add some water)
  6. 1 tablespoon raw honey

It’s a wonderfully balanced Morning Smoothie to wake me up and get going.

#8

GET A MASSAGE

OR A FACIAL

TREAT YOURSELF AT HOME

OR AT A SPA/MASSAGE PARLOUR.

I get a deep tissue massage at least once a month from my favourite Spa in Downtown, Toronto.

It helps me unwind. It helps my body release the toxins which build up and cause extra body aches and stress.

Massages are super beneficial for you. Those tight tensed muscles will thank you.

FOOT MASSAGES are another excellent Stress relief treatment!! Our foot has all the hidden points to trigger our body parts which may need to release

harmful toxins.

FACIALS are luxry for your mind and the most visible part of your body!

When your skin Glows you feel wonderful and it can have a lasting impact.

#9

JOURNALING

A JOURNAL to write about your day, feelings, emotions, goals or plans can bring an astonishing state of peacefulness to your mind.

Reflecting on your thoughts and seeing it written helps to understand our own self whom we often neglect.

Journaling and doodling are my favorite self-care activity.

There are many types of Journaling you can do. Starting from making your own journal to buying a fancy one.

There is Bullet Journaling too!

And an expert on it happens to be a fellow blogger friend. Check out her BLOG!

There are Journal prompts that come in store-bought journals nowadays to help people get into their own brain!

Such as this one right here.

#10

PRAY

It may be the last on my list today but it is certainly the MOST POWERFUL of them all.

At least for me.

Prayers bring the most utmost PEACE in your heart.

Prayers are DIRECTLY speaking to GOD

Prayers make us mindful of our actions and deeds, therefore taking better care of ourselves.

A sincere call to the Almighty can change what you may have thought was impossible to change. Never lose hope. – Mufti Menk

I also find solace and healing in listening to the Quran and lecture from Renowned Islamic Scholars.

They remind me why Allah created me and what is my purpose in this world.

A form of prayer is also remembering Allah through Dhikr. Dhikr is constantly keeping yourself reminded of the existence of Divine power.

Remembrance is to the heart what water is to the fish. And what is the state of a fish that leaves water? – Ibn Taymiyyah

________________________________________________

I hope you found this post beneficial.

The above approaches were expressed from my own personal perspective.

I have chosen them to be the most important parts of Self-care for me and as my recommendation.

There are much more ways to take care of yourself and if you have one that I did not mention, I would love to know about it!

Until next time!

Sincerely,

Tamanna

I’ve been working on implementing a few of these though i definitely need to incorporate more. I love smoothies, listening to books and bullet journaling for planning. I would like to be more focused in prayer and use journaling more for self reflection though,

This is a very nice article, thanks for writing and sharing it. Self care is so important but most women do not take time to do self care. I still struggle with taking time for self care for myself.

I struggled with it for years and it is still something I struggle with because I am too tired. But I do make sure to leave my kids once in a while with a friend/husband or my parents so i can have some ME time. 🙂

Oh, it does get hard focusing on one’s self, especially as a wife and a mother. Both are equally intense roles, not to mention all the other things on your personal to-do list. Sometimes, I even think that a husband is already a handful (Astaghfirullah), then I told myself… soon, I’ll be a mum and stress is not something to focus on, just DO DO DO and DO what is needed, especially on one’s self. If you’re an empty cup, you won’t be much help.

We recently had a month of no screen time (iPad and tv switched off completely) it really did give us a wake up call, it meant that as a family we were spending more quality time together. Happy family makes a happy me!

This is such an insightful, in-depth post! I am not a power napper – sleeping in the daytime just doesn’t happen for me, but I LOVE quick walks and journalling. I also feel really good when I’m on top of prayers – on time etc and that is something I’m working hard on.
